More Than Just the Mission Statement
The Hapa Student Community (HapaSC) is a welcoming social community for people of mixed race/ethnicity and their friends: a place that we can all call home. As an intelligent social group, we serve to bring a public awareness to the hapa culture and community.
HapaSC is also the only organization at USC devoted to creating a community where students can explore what it means to be multiracial, and explore its growing niche in our society.
The Many Things We Do
Our organization meets bi-weekly (this year our meetings are held on Thursdays in THH @ 5-6pm) and puts on annual events, such as our Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner, Fall and Spring Retreats, and Formal End-Of-Semester Dinners. We also plan a number of social (Bowling/Karaoke/Game Nights and Parties) and philanthropic activities (including participation in Relay For Life at USC) to facilitate bonding between our members. We often participate in our Umbrella Assemblies’ Events (like APASA’s Winter Formal and LSA’s Spring Formal), as well as CBCSA, APASS, and El Centro Chicano’s monthly Project ReMiX – a discussion forum for mixed race/hapa issues.
Each semester we host one large event, open to both the USC and LA communities. Last year these included a Comedy Night (followed by a panel led by our faculty advisor Dr. Velina Houston) featuring hapa comedians Steve Byrne (of Comedy Central), Kate Rigg, and Rachel Tomlinson, as well as Mixed and Matched, a Bone Marrow Drive and Concert in conjunction with Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches (A3M), APASA, and the USC Program Board. (Go HERE for professional quality pictures of the event.) In addition to joining with other USC organizations, we strive to make connections with mixed race/hapa organizations at other Universities, including UCI’s Mixed Student Organization (MSO) and UCLA’s Hapa Club.
